Correct ventilation
To air a room: turn the radiators off before opening the windows. A few minutes suffice for fresh air to enter the apartment without losing precious heat.
Individual regulation of room temperature
Save money easily while asleep: turn down the radiator temperature before going to bed or leaving home. Important: do not let the rooms cool down completely – it costs energy to heat them up again.
Leave radiators uncovered
Make sure that thick curtains and furniture are not in front of the radiators otherwise the outside wall benefits from the heat instead of the room. Bleed the radiator if it gurgles; do not be tempted to use it as a clothes dryer as this puts your heating bills up.
Windows: the candle test
Have you tested your windows for draughts? Seal any gaps and joints so that a lit candle no longer flickers. Close your shutters and curtains at night and save a few cents.
Close the doors
Keep doors closed to prevent warm air from passing from a heated to a colder room. Avoid mould in this way too.
Humidity: the right amount is decisive
Moist air is warm and provides a comfortable atmosphere that helps to keep dust down. Plants and air humidifiers enhance this but bathroom and kitchen vapours must be extracted very quickly to prevent mould from developing.
Water: less is more
Protect your wallet by using less water, especially hot water: shower instead of having a bath, turn taps off fully, flush with low flow toilets and use energy saving domestic appliances.
Bleed radiators regularly
to ensure that energy is used efficiently and economically. Trapped air prevents water circulating.
