New Year's resolution to save energy: Majority of tenants plan specific energy-saving measures for 2026 – digital solutions from Techem provide support
- 65% of respondents are planning specific energy-saving measures for the coming year
- 68% would use digital tools to monitor consumption
- Cost reduction remains the most important driver for energy saving
Eschborn, January 7, 2026. A recent Techem survey of 2,000 tenants shows that saving energy is an important issue for Germans in the new year: 65% of those surveyed have resolved to reduce their energy consumption in the coming year. Digital solutions that provide greater transparency in energy consumption are particularly in demand. 68% said they would use an app to save on heating costs. Cost reduction remains the most important driver: 91% of respondents want to save energy in order to reduce heating and electricity costs. But sustainability also plays a role: 58% cite environmental protection as their motivation. This is slightly more pronounced in western Germany (60%) than in the east (47%).
Lack of information on energy consumption
The survey clearly shows that many tenants do not have a clear overview of their heating costs and consumption. 32% do not know the amount of their heating costs, and only 15% have a very good understanding of their heating energy consumption. 41% only have a rough overview. “The results of the survey show that transparency and digital support are crucial in helping consumers save energy. Those who know their consumption can take targeted action—which is good for the wallet and the climate,” says Matthias Hartmann, CEO of Techem.
Digital solutions for greater transparency and efficiency
Digital solutions are needed to keep track of energy consumption and thus costs – 52% would like a monthly overview of their consumption, while 49% said that an app with real-time data would help them better understand their heating energy consumption. "Digitalization is the key to greater energy efficiency. With its digital boiler room (dt. Digitaler Heizungskeller), Techem draws on AI-supported analyses and continual monitoring to ensure optimal control of heating systems. This allows incorrect settings to be identified and corrected, saving an average of 15% in energy and CO₂. Our intra-year consumption information (dt. Unterjährige Verbrauchsinformation), which we provide to landlords and tenants of around 2.3 million apartments on a monthly basis, provides regular clarity on consumption. Such digital solutions are essential for supporting tenants and landlords in saving energy and advancing the energy transition," emphasizes Matthias Hartmann.
