Smart metering as a driver for electromobility

Blog entry - 24.04.2026

As the energy transition progresses, not only is electricity generation changing, but also our mobility. Corporate fleets are increasingly being electrified, and the number of new electric vehicle registrations is rising in the private sector as well—in the long term, certainly also due to rising fuel prices. As a result, the demand for charging points in residential and commercial properties is rising steadily. For landlords and property managers, this means that charging infrastructure is becoming an integral part of modern real estate. What matters is not just the installation of charging stations, but their cost-effective, legally compliant, and grid-friendly operation.

Charging Infrastructure Requires Transparency and Control

As wallboxes become more widespread, electricity consumption in buildings is changing noticeably. When multiple vehicles charge simultaneously, short-term peak loads can occur, placing additional stress on the public power grid. At the same time, more buildings are generating electricity locally, for example via photovoltaic (PV) systems. Buildings and their occupants are increasingly becoming “prosumers,” meaning they not only consume energy but also generate it.

To effectively balance generation and consumption, digital control of electricity flows is beneficial and necessary during periods of high grid load. On the one hand, energy should not be overproduced and left unused; on the other hand, electricity should be drawn from the grid whenever possible during times of the lowest electricity prices. Modern smart meter systems provide the necessary transparency and controllability for this purpose.

Smart Metering Systems from Techem: Transparency and Control in One Solution

Techem’s smart metering solutions are intelligent metering systems (iMSys) consisting of a modern metering device, a Smart Meter Gateway, and a control unit. Unlike conventional electricity meters, these systems capture consumption data at 15‑minute intervals and transmit the data regularly and securely.

In combination with a control box, they can also receive and process control signals. This allows the systems to make optimal use of self-generated power and optimize electricity costs. The Smart Meter Gateway thus serves as an intelligent load and energy management system. Charging processes can be managed purposefully—for example by prioritizing self-generated PV electricity when surplus is available. If, on the other hand, local generation is insufficient, the system seamlessly draws additional power from the public grid.

Control and Charging Services from a Single Provider

The smart systems provided by inexogy and Techem enable economically efficient and future-proof energy utilization within the building. As a competitive metering point operator, Techem serves as a full-service provider that holistically combines technical and administrative tasks.

Techem’s full-service scope includes:

  • Installation and commissioning of the Smart Meter systems in cooperation with inexogy
  • Operation, maintenance, and management of the intelligent metering systems throughout their entire lifecycle
  • Secure collection, transmission, and visualization of energy consumption data
  • Automated provision of billing-relevant data for property owners and property managers
  • Support for all billing processes related to metering point operation and energy management

This ensures that residents and users can rely on a robust infrastructure and make optimal use of charging capabilities. Charging stations are additionally supported by Techem as part of its 360-degree service.

Added Value for the Housing Sector

This integrated approach delivers tangible benefits, particularly for the housing sector. Billing-relevant energy data is captured and transmitted automatically, significantly reducing administrative effort—for example by minimizing the need for on-site meter readings. At the same time, tenants benefit from greater transparency regarding their energy consumption and potentially lower electricity costs. This, in turn, strengthens the attractiveness of modern, digitally enabled properties. Techem’s smart metering technology provides the foundation for optimized EV charging directly within the building environment. You can read more about Techem here
