Techem and inexogy join forces in smart metering

  • Techem acquires majority stake in inexogy, one of Germany's largest competitive metering point operators
  • Techem's completed investment in inexogy represents a growth path of EUR 320 million over the next five years
  • Together, Techem and inexogy are expanding the leading digital platform for the installation and operation of smart meters and controllable consumption devices

Eschborn/Saarlouis, September 9, 2025. Techem, a leading energy service provider for the real estate industry, acquires a majority stake in inexogy smart metering, one of Germany's largest competitive metering point operators. Techem's completed investment in inexogy includes a growth path for the next five years. Within this framework, EUR 320 million will be invested in the installation and operation of smart metering systems. The aim is to use data from 1.5 million smart metering systems to make the energy system more efficient and sustainable in the coming years.

The two companies complement each other perfectly: Techem contributes its many years of experience in digitalization, decarbonization, and energy efficiency, as well as an international portfolio of more than 13 million apartments. With Techem's financial support, inexogy will significantly expand its existing partner business in areas such as dynamic tariffs and prosumers, and support network operators in equipping their network areas entirely with smart metering systems.

Other key areas of focus for the partnership include tapping into new, shared customer segments, for example in the residential and commercial real estate, industrial buildings, and retail sectors, as well as further expanding Techem's digital platform. This platform provides the housing industry with all the data relating to real estate in one central location and will also comprehensively integrate metering point operation in the future. This enables Techem to offer comprehensive decarbonization solutions such as tenant electricity models and EV charging as a service provider. This results in integrated complete solutions, and the platform enables the efficient and scalable implementation of the smart meter rollout and the integration of controllable consumption devices.

“Smart meters are the key to a sustainable, digitally controlled, and cross-sector optimized energy supply. Our common goal is therefore clear: we want to make the efficient and digitized rollout in Germany as straightforward and simple as possible. In inexogy, we have found the right partner and can therefore significantly advance the digitization of the energy transition,” says Matthias Hartmann, CEO of the Techem Group.

“We are delighted to have such an established partner as Techem at our side. Together, we can pool our expertise and further advance the rollout of smart meters in Germany. Before we embark on the next scaling phase together next year, we will be massively expanding our installation capacities in collaboration with Techem before the end of this year,” comments David Zimmer, CEO of inexogy. The collaboration will focus particularly on one of inexogy's existing services: tenant electricity. This model uses smart metering systems to integrate both generation facilities and modern charging and heating structures in apartment buildings, allowing residents to benefit from lower electricity and heating costs. inexogy has already successfully implemented more than 1,000 such projects in recent years. Techem now aims to leverage the resulting synergies to significantly advance decentralized energy supply based on tenant electricity.

Techem already has one of the leading platforms for the digitalization and decarbonization of the building sector in Europe, which it uses to create the central infrastructure for connecting data, stakeholders, and digital applications in the building sector. inexogy is one of the most important and dynamic players in the smart meter rollout. Together with its partners—municipal utilities, energy suppliers, photovoltaic companies, chain stores, and real estate companies—inexogy offers all services related to the installation and operation of intelligent metering systems (iMSys) from a single source, nationwide and across network areas. This includes route planning, installation, change processes, market communication, and the visualization of measured values. An API interface also ensures continuous data availability, paving the way for key applications in the energy transition, such as dynamic electricity tariffs, direct marketing, virtual power plants, and grid-friendly control.

The partnership creates a key player in the digital transformation of the German energy industry, combining transparency, efficiency, and controllability—and making the energy transition tangible for households and businesses alike.

About Inexogy

Smart meters are at the heart of the new energy world: they provide precise information about electricity consumption and generation and help to adjust individual consumption - for instance, via dynamic electricity tariffs - to the availability of renewable energies. But that's not all: without their measurements, many applications that drive the energy transition would not be possible at all.

That is why inexogy is continuously working to create the data basis for a secure and sustainable energy supply. As a competitive metering point operator, inexogy installs and operates smart metering systems nationwide, ensuring transparency and fair participation of all citizens in the energy transition.
